type='text'>TER CX Activity in August

CX Ride at Salisbury Park - August 17th
TER will be putting-on a cyclocross race on November 12th. On August 17th there will be a team training opportunity at the venue. For those looking for skills instruction, from 5:30 to 6:00 we'll go over the basics before hitting the course for more intense training and course recon. Contact Todd Hockenberry for details at cx@teamevergreenracing.com

TER Cyclocross Clinic - Wednesday, August 31st Get your skills dialed in at TERs CX clinic hosted by TER racers Lauren Constantini and Todd Hockenberry. The clinic will go over the basics of CX skills including dismounts, remounts, barriers, bike handling, starts, cornering, etc. I will have information on pre-race routines and to what to expect at your first race. Lauren has been racing CX for several years and holds a category 1 license! She's excited to host the clinic and we're excited to have her. We will meet at the Lookout Mountain Youth Service Center at 5PM for introductions and get the clinic started at 5:30. The TER tent will be there and food/refreshments will be on hand.

Sneak peak at runup for Parker CX race only the fence will be removed to make it easier...

TER Parker CX race date November 12, 2011

We've got the permission of Parker for the venue and now we have a firm date on the ACA calender for the Parker CX race - Saturday November 12, 2011 at Salisbury Equestrian Center in Parker, CO. So I'm going to take this opportunity to offer a pre-race ride of the course we will be using for the TER CX race. Cult Cross was to be held on Sunday April 3 this year, and I actually had to get my work rescheduled to get the day off...and I still have that day off if necessary. So if I get enough of a response from interested TER CX racers, I will still take that day off and give you a tour of the course. We can meet at my house, and then take a short 5 mile ride to the venue, and then ride the course - so bring your CX bike or a mtn bike will also work if you prefer. If you are planning on helping to setup the course the Friday before the race, PLEASE take advantage of this. This will be very helpful for you to know the course so you can possibly lead the course setup in specific areas - it's a 2.2 mile course so it will be necessary for a few of you to know what needs to be taped off where - it will help me alot.

But I need enough of a response from interested racers to make it worthwhile. So, if you do want to preride the course on Sunday, April 3, please send me an email confirmation that you will be there... and I'll give you directions to my house. We'll set a time up as well...probably 9:00-10:00 am to leave my house. Hey, what the hell else do you have to do this time of year?

Respond to ckss396@msn.com no later than March 20 so I can confirm a go or no-go on this.

Cult Cross cancelled

CULT CROSS 2011 HAS BEEN CANCELED....

It is with some regret, and not great regret that Cult Cross 2011 has been canceled. The race will be held at the Salisbury Equestrian Park which is off of Motsenbocker Road in Parker. The course is mainly hard pack double track - about 2 miles per lap -mainly flat but one or two runups - paved finish line and a little bit of sand to run thru on the Cherry Creek beach. The venue has plenty of parking, a large grass area for vendors and should be a great place to race CX. This will not be a Cross Cup race...maybe next year.

The next step in the process is to get a race date from ACA at the CX Promoters meeting on Feb. 26. Currently, I do have a tentative date of Saturday, November 12. Once I get a firm date from ACA, I can submit the formal paperwork to Parker for final approval.

I'm going to need all the help I can get from Team Evergreen Racing members, especially all of you who race CX. Please plan on coming to the race not only to race, but to help out as well. If you haven't already contacted me with a volunteer offer please do so. I'm populating a spreadsheet with all the jobs we need done such as course setup day before race (this is the big one), registration, marshalls for parking, etc., and course teardown. Of course you can work before and/or after your race.

I'm planning on having a course pre-ride at the venue, sometime in August (before CX season starts) - I'll plan it around races and events the best I can. (I have a pretty busy ride schedule myself). If someone brings beer, we can call it a Pre-race party...so you'll get to celebrate and get a sneak peak at the course. Hope to see you there.

TER SM 35+ 4 wins CO Cross Cup!

Team Evergreen Racing SM 35+ 4 FINISHED 1ST in TEAM COLORADO CROSS CUP with 296 points!

Well done!

TER CX race venue in Parker - fall 2011

I'm working on securing a venue in Parker for the fall CX season. Anyone on the team who races CX should consider helping out at the race to meet TER work obligations. And if you don't race CX, we would still greatly appreciate the help. If you are interested in helping out, please email me, Cory Kramer at ckss396@msn.com with your preferences. I will need name, email address, team affiliation (we gladly accept help from other teams too!), volunteer preference (setup, teardown, registration, food concession, marshall, parking control), racing (yes or no) and race category. Please consider this an all day event depending on whether you are racing and working before and/or after - the more bodies we get, the less time everyone has to work.

At this point, we don't have the venue secured or a date from ACA for the event - we will know by the ACA promoters meeting in February. I could hear the rims squeak a bit and drag on the brakes when cornering, so this is something that definately would not help with race performance. So I took the wheel back to where I bought them and swapped them out for a new wheel - it has zero play in it - the way it should be. Just got to add some Stan's and put the Hutchinson Bulldogs back on and it'll be ready for next season, which is a long way off. The yokels at the shop said these were not made for CX - I probably just beat the hell out of em and that is what must have caused the play to develop. I don't think so. I've noticed a whole lot of CX racers that use these wheels and they were very highly recommended to me by a fellow racer who I know, knows his stuff. Anyone else out there have a problem with these? I'd like to hear about it.

DOPER of the YEAR declared

http://303cycling.com/Chuck-Coyle-RECEIVES-SANCTION-FOR-DOPING-VIOLATION

OK, it's been awhile since I have updated the Doper of the Month...and been on my 'dopers suck' tirades, but this one obviously hits pretty close to home. So I'm going to end the whole deal right here and now and declare this guy the official "DOPER of the Year" for this blog.

There's plenty to read out there about this cheater in VELONEWS and elsewhere, so I'll leave that up to you. And I am thru with wasting my time on this shit. Which is what I think the people who do this basically are - SHIT.

It's pretty sad to think that someone would stoop that low at our level of the sport, when there is not alot of money involved here...only bragging rights - but who knows what motivates these assholes. Baseball, football, cycling....all of em. If the leagues and organizations had any integrity at all, which neither the NFL, MLB and UCI have, they would say 'we have plenty of young talent coming into the sport - these young people can make our sport exciting without cheating - we can eliminate the cheaters and do just fine.' So I hope the ACA bans this guy from racing in Colorado ever again.

Todd Hockenberry wins SM 35+ 4 at Aspen Lodge!

http://www.americancycling.org/results/cross?year=2010&eventId=552&resultsetId=5514

AWESOME !!!!

PIX of Todd: http://teamevergreenracing.blogspot.com/2010/10/great-racing-this-fall.html

Brian France 1st place SM35+4 at Buena Vista!

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; CAS gave the UCI hope with a first decision in March 2010 that effectively rubber-stamped Valverde’s ban in Italy. On Monday, CAS announced:

“The CAS has partially upheld the appeals filed by the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) and the Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde. Accordingly, the CAS has imposed a two-year ban on Alejandro Valverde starting on 1 January 2010 but has denied the request of the UCI and WADA that results obtained by the athlete prior to the beginning of the suspension be annulled.”

Read more: http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/05/news/alejandro-valverde-draws-two-year-ban_119360#ixzz0pY4RG4Yg

Isn't is pretty strange that Ivan Basso got popped in Operation Puerto, served his two year ban and just won the Giro d'Italia? -So while Basso was serving his two year suspension, Valverde continued to milk the rediculous legal system and delay the inevitable. Thankfully justice prevailed and they caught up with this cheater.

Biggest Loser for May...and possibly the whole year

<img style="display:block; The source stated that "Lance is sick of hearing that most age group CX racers could kick his butt on the circuit, and is prepared to show them that is simply not true." It is also rumored that the Radio Shack sponsor has negotiated with German authorities and the UCI to allow Jan Ullrich to come back from retirement to lead the road racing team in Lance's absence. ASO, the organization that runs the Tour has stated that they would gladly welcome Ullrich back into the peloton as they can not bear to see Armstrong win another Tour, and have full faith that Ullrich will as always come in 2nd place anyway. Speculation as to the sponsor of the new LA CX team has been pointing towards Michelob Ultra beer, which has already been featuring Armstrong in some commercials. However, it is a well known fact that serious CX racers prefer good Belgian beer as a part of their training plan, and consider American lite beer to be detrimental to performance. As one veteran CX racer put it "If he thinks he can help his cause drinking that swill, well he doesn't know much about CX racing. He should have stuck to the Shiner Bock...at least it has some substance to it."

Blue Competition Cycles at Big Ring

I was in Big Ring this week checking out cross rigs and apparently Blue is offering TER a team deal on their bikes. This was news to me and a pleasant surprise considering the Norcross is right near the top of my "dream cross rig" list. My bank account isn't happy, but that's another story. Anyways, we get a pretty good deal on a bike that Jonathon Page uses on the World Cup circuit. He also helped design it. I really think these should be banned from use in any competition considering the danger they pose to other riders and possibly even more important - the rediculous cost. You can almost buy a CX bike for the cost of a pair of these tires!

I have no doubt their performance is phenomenal, but basically this would mean you are going to be at the end of the pack if you don't pony up the bucks to get them and use them to race. It means everyone would start using these just to stay competitive. I just don't think making it even more expensive to race CX is healthy for the sport.

http://www.mudandcowbells.com/blog/2010/3/10/yup-dugast-is-pimping-us-non-pros-with-the-diablo.html

Also a link to bike radar review of these tires... http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/tyres/road/product/diavolo-37540

If you are interested, there is a poll on this subject on the right hand margin.

Cult Cross

Cult Cross 2010 is on! Larry (the organizer) has worked out the details and reports that the venue looks "excellent". If you are not familiar with Cult Cross, it's the only Spring CX race in the US and it's right here in Colorado on April 3rd. If waiting another 7 months for cross racing is out of the question this race is for you. The guys that were really gonna shake up the cycling world. The team with the rad cool kits with the Anarchy 'A' symbol graffitti'ed on them in their 2nd year. wow. Anarchy is such a cool idea. It makes me want to kinda stand on the side of the road during a stage race and chuck a big ol piece of rebar into the front wheel of a Rock Racing homie. That would prove to em how much I love anarchy and love their team. Anarchy is sooooooooooo cool. Well, it looks like that rag salesman who owns the team is gonna sell out to the Mexican drug cartels because no one else will sponsor him. what a cryin shame. Doesn't matter much anyway cuz the only guys good enough to race for him were all previous dopers anyway. Oscar Sevilla, Santiago Botero...a couple of 'Mericans who used to juice as well but I can't remember their names. type='text'>CX magazine fantasy league

CX magazine has an interesting CX fantasy league that anyone can participate in. For me, it all started very well as I picked Neils Albert as my #1 and Sven Nys as #2. Albert was winning it all in the early stages and I went as high as 100th place in week 7 and 8. In week 14 and on thru week 18, Albert had started to run out of gas. Nys and others were starting to nab some wins from him. Then on week 19, the shit hit the fan. Or maybe I should say, the fan hit the King...King Albert. Apparently a fan had interfered with Albert and at first he had blamed it on Nys hysterical fans, but when the truth was discovered, it turned out that actually he was messed with by one of his own fans...and promptly apologized to Nys. This guy has some class. Nevertheless, it ends up that he got a few broken ribs out of this scrum and this was right before the World Championship race. This definately did not help him...or me. So the King was dethroned and in the meantime my fantasy scores plummeted off course past the course tape and into the weeds. So, there is always next year....

It seems the leading teams have my pick reversed with Nys as #1 and Albert as #2. Don't know if I will follow that logic for next season, but maybe....And the women picks are also important with the best teams picking Daphny VanDe Brand and Sanne Van Paassen. Actually, I think I would go with Marianne Vos as #1 and VanDe Brand #2, but this depends on how they set up the lists. They don't have all racers on each list so sometimes you just have to choose what ever is available.

Biggest Loser February

Well, February is normally kinda slow for bike racing, but here's a nominee for BIGGEST LOSER - a guy you've never heard of riding a race you've never heard of for a team you've never heard of. Maybe we will be lucky and this guy will just go away since apparently no one has ever heard about this guy and probably doesn't really care anyway...especially now. And by the way, the article mentions that he had already been nabbed for doping before. Yup, a 2nd time LOSER which really qualifies him for BIGGEST LOSER in cycling. Yes, you guessed it - I'm going to post a monthly story about an individual nominated for the BIGGEST LOSER in CYCLING. And maybe at the end of the year, we will have a poll so we can vote for the nastiest of the lot, and send them an appropriate present - like a pair of worn out shorts just raced in at Xilinx CX in December and never laundered. (We may have to add something to them to meet their very low standards, if you know what I mean.)

Please feel free to email with any miscreants you may feel should be called out. I only have so much time to devote to these slime balls, and you may know of one that is better than I could have imagined. Do not limit yourself to CX lowlife...there are plenty of em involved in all aspects of cycling, as we are well aware.

So here goes, for January I am nominating the girlfriend of Ricardo Ricco (yes, that Ricardo Ricco) who just happens to be, well, a girl and CX racer (at least until she was caught). Her name is Vania Rossi. Here is the article from velonews....http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/01/news/riccos-girlfriend-tests-positive-for-cera_103314 Yup, just like Ricco, pretty freakin smart! Of course, if Ricco lives up to his very low standards, he will no doubt afford us with something that we can use to nominate him in 2010...I hear his suspension is up in March.

Ciao!

2010 CX World Champion - Zdeněk Štybar

Long sleeve fleece lined CX skinsuit

The last order from Capo for TER 2010 kits or accessory clothing will be placed soon. Pressure was around 40 psi which for me is about 20 lbs less than I had run with tubed tires in the past. I knew I was running pressure a bit high (tubed) so going down to 40 psi with the new tubeless did prove to me that the lower pressure is the way to go. No burp problems, no handling problems and fearless against goatheads. So far they have done everything I had hoped for. I did meet one TER CX'er who did experience a burp problem, so depending on your weight, you may have to run higher pressures. (I'm one of those 130 lb. featherweights, so who knows, I might be able to go even lower) - but for now I will keep running around 40 lbs.

If you go tubeless with the Stans system, just make sure to view the installation videos that they have online - these instructions are excellent as they will show you exactly how to do it right.

CX Season key dates

From the ACA website: 12/05/2009 Colorado Veldrijden Crusade Colorado CX Championships, Littleton, CO. Just installed a set of Hutchinson Bulldog (tubeless specific) tires on Easton EA-90 SLX wheels using the Stan's NoTubes system. It is quite a pain in the ass and messy as hell to install...not to mention frustrating and infuriating...and thats after watching his very good video on how to do it about 20 times before starting. Oh well, its a learning experience.

Did a short ride on them with 50 lbs each front and rear and no leaking at all. If you have investigated running tubeless for CX at reduced pressures, you will find that 'burping' air when riding typical CX terrain is a problem. Eventually you can burp enough pressure out that you are ending up with a flat tire and a DNF. But apparently, that is if you run too low a pressure. To be honest, the main reason I am going tubeless is for goathead protection - I am not one of these guys that has a spare set of wheels in the pits - being able to change wheels is not going to help me - grinding away with the same set and keeping air in em till the finish line is. So you have to look at what kind of racer and what your true objectives are. The really fast podium guys spend the extra bucks and headaches on tubular CX wheels and tires. For them, I am sure it is worth it.

I have tended to run my tires with higher pressure than most, so going down to 50 lbs is actually an added blessing. Maybe I can go down to around 40 lbs at still be burp proof...even better. But from what I understand, don't be thinking you can run 25 lbs like a MTB tire. It apparently will not work.

MudandCowbells.com has an excellent write up on user experience here: http://www.mudandcowbells.com/blog/2009/3/9/tubeless-tires-and-cyclocross.html

I also understand (from reading in the above link) that Stans makes a CX specific rim that hooks up the bead better and allows you to run even lower pressure than most. May be the better set of wheels to get if you really want the best stuff to go tubeless.

No support from oddsnendos wheel makers...

Haven't heard a thing from Mike Garcia of oddsnendos. The wheel that he builds uses an Aussie hub marked SpeedCific. I had about 6500 miles on a pair of wheels that seemed to work just fine...until last weekend when I was descending Deer Creek on my road bike. On the descent, going around the corners, the rear wheel felt like it was washing out - I thought I had a flat, but when I stopped and examined it, the wheel was loose even with the skewer locked solidly. To make a long story short, I nursed this thing home for 30 miles and about a block from home, the wheel finally locked up sideways into the chain stay (as it was so loose). I had to carry the bike home ala CX carry for the last 100 yards. Taking the wheel off I noted the cassette was as loose as a goose. I removed the skewer and the cassette (with stacking body attached) just fell on the floor. The hub had sheared off inside the stacking body (I know I'm using the wrong term, but this is the cage that your cassette gears stack onto). I've never seen anything like this, but I think the quality of the rear hub is pretty poor. I do not believe this is a servicable hub, so I don't think there was any routine maintenance that could have been done to have prevented this failure. In short, I think the SpeedCific stuff is crap.

Anyway, I have tried to contact Mike Garcia, but have so far not received a reply. I will update the blog if anything comes of this, but right now it looks like I just have a piece of junk wheel that will end up being a total loss. I would not recommend these hubs to anyone. Spend a few extra bucks and buy something with Shimano or Mavic hubs. I have never had either of those disinigrate like the Aussie piece of crap. Believe it or not, I just had another pair of these built last year for the Scattante CX bike I built featured in this blog in an earlier post. I built this up this winter, and if you've never tried building your own bike, try it - it's fun, entertaining, frustrating and rewarding. You won't have all the parts, so hunting them down can be an education in frustration. The frame comes with a fork and all the parts for the insertion in the frame (head tube) - but it did not have the cyclocross specific front deraileur pulley - you will need this pulley if your frame routes the front deraileur cable over the top tube and down the seat tube, but not if you have a frame that routes it under the down tube. Anyway, try finding one at Home Depot...good luck. Go to cyclocrossworld.com and buy theirs for $10 - it's worth it. Also you will need a proper fork tubing cutter - don't dare cut this without one - you will need the guy at the bike store to pound your bottom crown race bearing down with the specific tool you also do not have. Go to the bike store and have em do both for you - if it costs a few bucks it's worth it - these are two things you do not want to mangle. Build the front on the bike first...thats the fork into the frame and handlebars into the stem and bolted down on the fork tube. Next is the crankset - read the directions carefully and install this. Then put the shifters loosely on the handlebar, the brakes on the frame and the cables for the brakes in the shifters and routed thru the frame. Get all this adjusted loosely. (This is also where you will realize there is another tool you need - a proper cable housing cutter - luckily I had one from my days of working on airplanes.) Then install the front deraileur and then the rear deraileur. Now route the cables from the shifters to both deraileurs. At this point, you have everything except the wheels and chain install, and I forgot to mention, the whole time all the above was done, you had the seat post inserted in the seat tube, so you could hang this thing from a bike stand to work on it. That is actually the first thing I did after removing the frame from the box - it is also a good way to inspect it before doing anything else. Anyway, you need to put your new cogset into your new wheels - the directions for doing this are found in any decent maintenance manual (another thing you need to get along with a cassette socket tool and torque wrench if you want to do it properly - more tools to buy!) With the cassette in place, you can install your rear wheel and chain and finish up the cables. Once you have all the cables done, you can read the directions again before cutting anything to final length - adjust and leave plenty of extra cable before cutting. In fact, I actually left the cables at full length and went on a ride before I cut anything. If you use Shimano shifters, front and rear deraileurs, you will find they have very good instructions on how to adjust all this stuff - read it at least a few times and utilize it as you turn the adjuster screws - in fact, the front deraileur is actually more difficult to adjust properly than the rear one. You will also need to have both wheels in place so you can tweak the front and rear brakes, which also takes some time. Install your saddle to go on a shakedown ride and be sure to carry appropriate hex keys and screwdriver so you can tweak anything needing small adjustments - after a few rides and a few adjustments, the last thing to do is to tape the handlebars. Up to that point it is still not too late to remove cables and cut housing lengths if you feel you may have left them a little long. After taping the bars, you are just about done. You may notice a bit of change after a few rides, but usually this is addressed with the screwdriver, so you might carry one when you ride, for at least the first 100 miles. Have fun!

One thing about the fork that comes with this particular frame -it is a bit narrow (inside) compared to some other makes. I say this because I can not get my Avid Shorty 6 brakes open enough to remove the front wheel with the tire inflated. I know some other bikes also have this problem (I have a Ridley SuperCross with the same problem and brakes, but not as bad) - anyway, you may find the TRP brakes or KORE brakes that I have seen, may be a better choice for this bike. The KORE brakes that I have seen use a shorter pad and that may make the difference. Keep this in mind if you really want this for a race bike where you have to make a quick wheel change because you are not going to be able to do it. But for a training bike or just a fun CX bike that you can ride in some pretty muddy conditions, this bike really is a great value.

CULT CROSS

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300621861667722258" style="FLOAT: left; Red, white and.......black? Where's the blue? On the bib number? Geez. For crying out loud, you would not have known these were folks racing for the good ol US of A unless the side of the skinsuit and chest said U S A on it. Compare this shot to the one of Katie Compton back in 06 wearing the colors...it's the one of her on the right sidebar. I really think they could have done MUCH better with the design, but to summarize this race for the USA, it appeared that it was just one huge wardrobe malfunction when all was said and done...read on.....

Do you think they could have made the damn thing in knicker or full length leggings so she didn't even have to wear leg warmers? Or make the elastic strong enough and fitted so the leg warmers wouldn't have fallen down around her ankles? I've had the same thing happen to me, but then, I am just a mere mortal and it hardly made any difference in my placement...but I know it certainly didn't make me faster! I don't see what the problem would have been to have a skinsuit with short length and one with knicker or full length leggings.

The skinsuit was made by Nike, and from what I have read, is more like what Lance wears out on the road. You would think Nike would have put more effort into insuring that this thing was first class and decent enough to represent their fine line of clothing - and upholding their tradition of cutting edge fashion style. Apparently not. Did I mention that the only pair of cycling shorts that actually vaporized in my washing machine after about a dozen rides, were Nike? Nike, I am not impressed.

Nevertheless, lets not forget that Katie did come in 2nd place in spite of all this.
